New: Make it Mine (MIM)

Erica Sadun | 10:34 am | November 25, 2007 | Hacks, Applications, Software, iPhone

So I was messing around with a bunch of undocumented SpringBoard preferences, when I bumped into one that lets you set a fake carrier. It’s called (surprise, surprise) SBFakeCarrier. Heh.Make it Mine allows you to set any short string (actually nearly any short string, it kind of balks with some punctuation) as your “carrier”. Launch, type some text, tap Set. The program quits, restarting SpringBoard, and when you unlock, your new “carrier” awaits.”Before taking your iPhone into the genius bar, make sure to use “reset”, which removes the preference from SpringBoard and resets you back to your defaults.

Wow, so nice! Is there anyway to fit the font size so that longer phrases fit or to allow the user to set the font size?

Erica, you never fail to disappoint! This is the best.

Comment by m@ | November 27, 2007 | 10:07 am

it crashes on my 1.1.2

i was really looking forward to this utility because I can not change my carrier logo. I do not use one of the providers listed, and when i change them, my carrier name still appears - “SpeakOut”. Yet I do not see the file for them listed. In fact, i have deleted all the carrier images, but the “SpeakOut” still appears.

Any ideas?

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 27, 2007 | 12:43 pm

Edward: The option does not offer a font size option. More details about doing the setting manually should publish today at TUAW

Comment by m@ | November 27, 2007 | 2:09 pm

after conversing with others, the 1.1.2 firmware must reference the sim card in order to pick the image used for the carrier. this probably explains why my carrier will not change after i deleted all the DEFAULT_CARRIER and FSO_CARRIER images, yet my “SpeakOut” carrier still appears.

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 27, 2007 | 2:12 pm

Use “reset” to remove your custom carrier preference

Comment by m@ | November 27, 2007 | 2:19 pm

sorry, i may have been unclear.

i have not been able to use MiM on 1.1.2

it crashed both times i tried to run it.

do i need to set particular permissions on the app?

Comment by BHSPitMonkey | November 27, 2007 | 9:34 pm

Sweet! Works beautifully on iPod Touch 1.1.1.

Know if it’s possible to create blank space at the beginning of the carrier name? (I’d like to have an image there, via Summerboard.)

Comment by 3NA | November 28, 2007 | 8:29 pm

m@: After you copy it to your iPhone, you will have to give it execute permissions:

> sudo chmod 0775 MIM.app

However, even after doing this, I have similarly been unable to run it on my ver 1.1.1 iPhone. It gives me a blank white screen until I press the home button to quit.

Erica: system requirements?

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 28, 2007 | 9:18 pm

You have to +x the application inside the app folder, not the folder itself.

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 29, 2007 | 11:00 am

m@: There should be an installer version out now.

Comment by DCDJ | November 29, 2007 | 12:44 pm

Hello Erica - What source needs to be added so that I can download MIM via installer? It’s not showing up with any of the sources I have now. Thanks!

Comment by m@ | November 29, 2007 | 4:00 pm

Erica, Thanks!

i changed the permissions (and thanks 3NA) and the app works great.

appreciate your continued apps/tools/developments.

Comment by lazaruz | November 29, 2007 | 4:21 pm

Comment by orehian | November 30, 2007 | 2:29 am

i have tried MIM and it’s great.
however after i try to reset back to default, the app just seems to remain there and now i am unable to reinstall or uninstall part of the app
and it has caused my installer unable to install other apps too. any advice on wat should i do??

Comment by ciden | November 30, 2007 | 7:10 am

Hi, I have installed this on my iPhone (v 1.0.2) - bit it still displays my carriers name - Vodacom-SA. I’ve also switched the phone off, and on again, restarted SpringBoard via Summerboard - nope…

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 30, 2007 | 7:24 am

I’m pretty sure that Summerboard replaces SpringBoard functionality and may not support mods like Make it Mine.

Comment by Erica Sadun | November 30, 2007 | 7:29 am

Please direct any Installer.app issues to ste@psmxy.org.

Comment by ciden | November 30, 2007 | 10:11 am

Erica - I had the same thoughts about Summerboard. But I have Summerboard installed on my iPod Touch aswell, running 1.1.1 - and MIM works on it without a hitch.

Could the problem possibly be the “Customize” app that I also have installed on my iPhone (1.0.2.) - maybe Summerboard + Customize??

Comment by wildride | November 30, 2007 | 9:12 pm

I think if anything ciden for the app to work you have to have filmware 1.1.1 installed i could be wrong though but just a theory

Comment by wildride | November 30, 2007 | 10:23 pm

Question, Im considering installing filmware 1.1.1, Does the apps for 1.0.2 work for 1.1.1? when i downgrade the baseband back to 1.02 or is there anything else i should know before upgrading to 1.1.1? I apologize for asking a question not totally related to mim i didnt know where to ask =)

Comment by Uko | December 1, 2007 | 2:00 am

Very nice app!!!

But you know, there is a posibility, to set your cariier name as picture, though it isn’t working when your carrier name is set as string. Can you update your program, so there will be a switch that will disable and enable picture option. It will be realy cool!

Cheers!
Uko

So I took the plunge this weekend, and after a few scary moments - I’m now running 1.1.1 - and Erica, your software runs beautifully! I even put in my company name - which is quiet long - and it squeezed it to fit - brilliant!!!

Comment by mrgrieves | December 3, 2007 | 11:38 am

Erica, I don’t know if you know this, but Make It Mine has an unexpected added bonus.

If you set the carrier name to AT&T, it allows users not on an official iPhone network to use the Customize app to use a custom carrier graphic.

Previously non-official network user could only use the Customize application to change the carrier graphic by patching their springboard.app.

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone else has this problem.
I installed Make it Mine from the Installer app. The program didn’t seem to work on my firmware 1.0.2. (kept showing my original carrier name).

Then I noticed, the installer.app has disappeared from the Springboard. It didn’t get pushed to the next page, because I had installed Launcher.
I could see installer.app in the Applications folder, but I couldn’t launch it from the terminal.
Could anyone tell me how to get the Installer.app running again? Thanks a lot.

I just installed make it mine on my phone
but when i start the application
a message immediately quickly flashes up
then I am left with the following message:
It’s not AT&T, baby
then when i try and set the carrier name
nothing happens

1) this is a phone i bought from US and unlocked it here in the UK
2) I dont have the AT&T simcard
3) DO i just type the carrier name or do I enclose it in quotations?

Is there a way round it

Hi Erica,

Nice App. I was wondering if you can modify it and make it so that your carrier text can constantly slide by. continue to roll through your text instead of once and then stop. Thank you!!!

Erica, I’ve been following your iPhone hacking progress since iDay and I’m continually impressed. A while back I installed Make it Mine and entered my custom carrier logo as “ROBOTS” — when springboard restarted, nothing happened to my carrier logo and I realized/assumed it was due to my specific settings with Customize which I then tried tweaking to see if I could get “ROBOTS” to appear. I could never get it and just assumed some sort of conflict was overriding your software.

Now, I just restored and updated (jailbroken 1.0.2) to 1.1.2 (not jailbroken) and suddenly and surprisingly my carrier logo now reads “ROBOTS” !!
My problem is that I need to visit the Genius Bar because my headphone jack is wacky and I don’t want Apple to know my phone has been hacked. Is there some way to get “AT&T” back up there? my only thought seems annoying… re-jailbreak, download Make it Mine, “Reset”, then Restore in iTunes again. Does this sound like it would work? I truly appreciate your thoughts on my issue. — I want to get my headphones working!!

Comment by WorldScott | January 15, 2008 | 4:54 pm

It seems that this change carries through despite a firmware update. I wonder if there could be a buffer overflow attack that could be kept in this pref. on say version 1.1.1 and then accessed later on (after an update) in an “Oktoprep” style angle of attack?

I have the same problem . I just upgraded to 1.1.3 with the fake carrier name remaining. It looks like there’s no downgrading or jailbreaking available. Any help? Probably best to just wait for a 1.1.3 jailbreak?

Erica–

Love Make It Mine. Now what about a MIM2 that allows me to choose a logo as well?!

Absent that, what font and font size does MIM now use? I’m creating some carrier logos of my own but find myself addicted to the MIM font.

Thanks.

Comment by Fofer | February 5, 2008 | 1:09 pm

For a host of reasons, I’m planning on sticking with 1.1.2 on my iPod touch.

Unfortunately now, Installer keeps reminding me about Make It Mine version 0.03-113, that I’m unable to run (it requires 1.1.3.) Installer does not yet have the ability to allow us to ignore certain versions… so this nag isn’t going away. It breaks my ability to use “Update All” and the flag of new updates to consider will always be wrong.

So… is there any chance a future update of MIM will support both 1.1.3 as well as older versions? If not, why not set this up as a separate fork, or a new project, called MIM2 (or something?) That way, at least, those of us not yet on 1.1.3 can keep chugging along comfortably with the older original version, and those on 1.1.3 can forge ahead with the new one.

Thanks for the consideration.

Comment by Fofer | February 7, 2008 | 9:08 pm

Never mind; I’m not going to wait around. I just uninstalled Make It Mine and will use the standalone app Caption Crunch instead. It works fine on 1.1.2 and won’t give me these incessant Installer.app issues.

Hi I am running version 1.1.3 on the iphone using SummerBoard and MIM version0.03-113. It works nicely replacing my carriers name but it removed removed the wallpaper behind the icons turning the background to black.

I am no longer able to switch to any wallpaper. The wallpaper on the lock screen changes but the not behind the icons. I tried removing MIM and got my carriers name back, but I am still unable add any wallpaper to the icon screen (home page).

Hey Erica. I’ve got little problem with MIM. I changed the banner to bunch of random characters and now my iPhone’s Süringboard is constantly crashing (OS 3.0).

As my springboard constantly crashes and restart I cannot reset the banner. I’ve a complete reset and installed OS 3.0 again. But as soon as I try to import any of my old backups, all of them created while MIM was installed, my springboard collapses again.

Cann I somehow manually remove MIM/reset the banner if I can access the filesystem?

Thanks in advance!

Find the com.apple.springboard.plist backup file with mdhelper, delete it, restore the phone and restore from backup.

how do i remove this? Its nice, but i would like for my old carrier name to be back on there. I have 3.0, its unlocked.. and jailbroken ofcourse. I just want to remove it, and put it the most simpliest terms. I cant restore to default because i dont know how to unlock or jail break it. I removed it from cydia, is there something else i should do?

Anyother time you remove a mod from cydia and restart the phone it goes away, but for some reason is still there. I starting to wish i never put it on my phone. It worked fine, I just want to remove it now. thanks.

Comment by Erica Sadun | January 25, 2010 | 12:29 am

Re-install the app. Read the instructions. (Basically, you set the name to blank and it will remove it.)

This is not a mod per say. It’s a built-in feature that Apple did not expose via user settings.
