What’s new with SendSong 0.21?
Erica Sadun | 10:28 pm | November 5, 2007 | Update, Applications, Software, iPhone
I just updated SendSong to version 0.21. This new version adds “sharing”. So you can send files from your music library to any iPhone running SendFile or any Mac running FileCatcher.
This version continues and refines upon the updates from 0.20. Ringtones should now be more reliable–let me know what % play back right after you test–although you still have to reboot after adding them to avoid the “my ringtone plays back as marimba” problem. This is an iPhone fault, not an Erica fault.

Hi Erica,
Just thought of a challenge for you:
How about creating a little program from which you can play internet radio. On top of this it would be great if you could set an alarm so that the radio turns on when you want t wake up.
Right now there is no such solution on the market. The only solutions available entails you to purchase large expensive equiptments that clutter down your living/sleeping room. The idea would be to have all in your Iphone which is docked to a soud system.
Do you recon you can do this?

I believe Nate True is working on an Internet Radio client already.

For what it’s worth: this update fixed a problem I had with earlier versions where some songs just won’t stick, regardless of the number of reboots or retries.
Thank you very much Erica!

What a great app Erica. I loved it on 1.0.2 but STILL having trouble with it on 1.1.1. Have just updated it to version .21e, my ringtones are all AAC (.m4a), they all play fine in iTunes and on the iPhone (using the iPod), but they’re kind of “hit or miss” when playing through SendSong. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. Is there anything that we, as users/testers, can provide for you (logs or such) to aid in troubleshooting?
Also, as a future feature enhancement… is there any rhyme or reason to the sorting of SendSong. My ringtones always seem to end up at the very end of the list which requires alot of scrolling. Anyway to add a sort feature/preference? Just food for thought. Functionality of the ringtones is priority #1. Thanks!!!!

Unfortunately, it’s kind of a game of us vs Apple. In 1.0.2, Apple made it easy. In 1.1.1, Apple made it hard. I’m not sure it’s really worth fighting much more.
Comment by Erica Sadun | November 7, 2007 | 11:19 am
Sorting: Order songs were added to library. I keep wanting to get around to adding a search box and sort options but I’m so low on free time and I have so many commitments!

hey erica, i just update to 0.21e and im starting to have a new problem when trying to send a song to ringtones. The song is trimmed down to 30 seconds, and in .m4a (aac) format. When I try to send the song my iPhone freezes up and nothing happens.
After a few minutes it restarts but the song is not sent. Im on a 1.1.1 jailbroken 8gb

update on my last comment… after trying and having my phone freeze on me three times, it is now working
Comment by fredthedog | November 8, 2007 | 9:30 am
I had the same problem…..Froze for 30 secs then crashed. It seemed to fix itself if I played a clip first then moved files.
Comment by Erica Sadun | November 8, 2007 | 10:50 am
That’s really odd that you have the freeze then crash. When you send to ringtones it normally takes about 5-10 seconds to copy the song, but 30 seconds is way out of line.
Thanks for the heads up

I was also experiencing the crash. I have restored version 0.20e

THANK You Erica for your Hard Work.
I thought I would share how this is working out for me.
iphone 1.1.1
SendSong.21e
1. I successfully “Send song” to Ringtones.
2. Then select that ring tone in the settings.
3. it plays just fine
4. reboot the iphone
4. call the iphone and confirm the ringtone works.
(and it does)
…THEN the Problem occurs when I sync to itunes ….
After syncing to itunes (with option of SYNC RINGTONES ON or OFF), the ringtone reverts back to Marimba.
Anyone else seen this? Thanks!
JB70

After sync, just run SendSong, quit, and reboot your phone.
Let me know if this works for you — Erica

Hi Erica,
I tried as you said no use, every after the itune sync the new added ringtone gone. If I rund Send Song again all ringtone appear again. However, this is very troublesome to run sendsong after every sync. Any help?
Comment by Erica Sadun | November 9, 2007 | 2:43 pm
It sounds to me as if the ringtone situation is improving in 1.1.2, but I have no hard data yet to back that up.

hi Erika, tahnks for all your work.
I installed sendsong 0.21e on my iphone 1.1.1 , it worked perfect and now I’ve my favourite song as ringtone.
The problem is that when i open itunes, it does not recognize my iphone anymore. what can I do?
Comment by Erica Sadun | November 11, 2007 | 11:09 am
I absolutely assure you that editing the Ringtones.plist file (which is what SendSong does) has no effect on whether iTunes recognizes your iPhone or not. Check your USB cable
Comment by laura | November 11, 2007 | 11:57 am
thanks Erica for your prompt answer. You were absolutely right, there was a problem with my cable.
Your app works great and i am very grateful for all your work!!

Losing ringtones is due to Apple’s iTunes overwriting the Ringtones.plist file. Running Sendsong restores that file.

Hi Erica
First of all: THANKS A LOT for this (and all your other) tool(s)!!
I made my own ringtones and attempted to upload them using SendSong 0.21.
My Problem is that I cannot scroll down to the ringtones as the application crashes and goes back to Springboard before I get the chance to send the file to the ringtones-folder.
I am running 1.1.1 and your tool seems to be the by far easiest way to add my own ringtones.
…any hints?
I guess it would simply help if you would turn the display order upside down showing the last added songs / files on the very top.
Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Erica,
Great stuff you are doing,
Just wonder about SendSong. I’m trying it but it seems to it’s not working for me.
Another question for you, what development language are you using? Was thinking of to start doing my own software for ex read SIM cards contacts so you easy can convert from SonyEricsson contacts to iPhone contact list.

Erica,
LOVE SendSong, one of the best apps for iPhone. Here are some suggestions:
1. Music is alphabetized by Artist but displayed by Song Title. Can you either show the Artist or alphabetize everything by song title so it’s easier to find the song you want?
2. It’s hard to get to the bottom of the list. Is it possible to implement a quicker way to scroll down the bottom, possibly the same way it is done in the iPod app with the letters A-Z on the side?
3. The entire song is sent to ringtones when only 30 seconds will ever play during a phone call. Can you implement a way to select only a certain 30 seconds on the song, with possible fade-in fade-out options? This would be a luxury, I know.
4. The program always crashes when I get near the bottom of the list.
Thanks for your hard work.

Hi Erica,
Great job with SendSong. I am having a problem however. I installed version 021e on my 1.1.2 iphone. I already hade some ringtones on the phone that I had added via ITunes. After installing sendsong, they disappeared from the phone. I then uninstalled sendsong and re-sync’d with itunes. Although I see itunes send it’s ringtones to the phone, when the phone sestarts I can see the list of custom ringtones flsah on the screen but they are not listed when I go to the sound settings to select a custom ringtone. Is there a way to resolve this?
Comment by Erica Sadun | November 22, 2007 | 7:39 pm
Under 1.1.2, you’d be better off skipping SendSong and just using the simple rename-to-m4r trick.
To avoid SendSong overwriting your iTunes-synced songs, go into ~/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes and remove all the Ringtones.plist files, including any “hold” or “old” ones.
Comment by franmiele | November 23, 2007 | 8:56 am
Please bear with me I am new at all this. Where are these plists? On my phone or my computer. If on my phone how do I get to them. Also where do I find info about the rename-to-m4r trick you mention.
Sorry if I am being a pain.

I’ve installed the latest update for send song 0.30
2 things to mention:
1. send song no longer crashes on my 1.1.2 firmware when scrolling to the bottom of the list. 0.30
(all songs were present send song version e21)
2. send song does not show my full list of songs.
a lot of songs are missing from the list that send song shows. particularly the songs i want to use as ringtones.
Comment by xenphan | December 30, 2007 | 3:53 pm
I’ve removed and re-synced my entire library.
alphabetically, there are songs missing from every letter and number…
verified if songs are present in ipod player, and they are.

Okay, so i noticed that there was a little lag when shutting down the app by clicking the home button.

Hi! i’ve been using your apps (loving it, btw) and was wondering a few thingys
1> what is the source thingy i should add in apptap? (for some reason, it just dissapeared ?_? ) , like the .xml list for the repository
and 2> can you put out a 1.1.1 mirror for MIM and Banner apps (i’m still scared of upgrading
)
thankyou!

Hello Erica
Thank you for all your wonderfull applications. I am planning on donating to you. Erica, i had sendsong installed on my iphone and loved it. I updated my iphone to 1.1.3 and sendsong no longer works. It does not recognize untiled songs (which i have many) and even titled songs cannot be used as a ringtone. Do you know if this will be fixed. I am love it so much i may even downgrade my iphone.
Thank you again for all your hard work, it is really appreciated.
Pete

For all those who have version less than 1.1.3 and still want to install Sendsond the following method will be helpful.
1.Download SendSong-0.30.zip from http://ericasadun.com/ftp/Applications/SendSong/
2.Login the iphone using winscp http://limitededitioniphone.com/windows-guide-to-using-winscp-with-iphone/
3.Use “alpine” for authentiating and “dottie” for logginging into iphone
4.Copy the unzipped contents to the applications folder.
5.To set file permissions(CHMOD) right click on the folder or file and select properties.
6.change the Octal to 0755 for sendsong and 0644 for the rest of the files.
7.Disconnect winscp
8.Restart the phone
