Test Request: iPhone Audio recognition

Erica Sadun | 10:31 pm | January 7, 2008 | Test Requests, Software, iPhone

First of all, this was not my idea. The inspiration was from GeeZuzz (I hope I got that nick right!) who figured out the big idea but it took several weeks of hacking to get the iPhone details working so I take a little credit too.

Download a copy of the Listen beta. It’s still *very* beta. Install it on your iPhone, get near music and run it. It will sample the music for 5 seconds and then attempt to contact the id server. If it succeeds, great, you’ll see the song, artist and album. If it fails, nothing happens. You just wait 30 seconds and if you haven’t gotten an ID, quit and restart the program.

Let me know how it goes.

Recognized “Big Poppa” right off the bat. Next try restarted and then sent my phone into recovery mode.

Yikes!

Comment by bshigenaka | January 7, 2008 | 11:52 pm

This isn’t totally original - Sony Ericsson has had this feature for a little while now. Here’s one of their newer phones with the feature, which they call TrackID:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/overview/w380a?cc=us&lc=en

I still think it’s awesome that you’re planning to bring it to the iPhone, and I am starting to believe if someone suggested that the iPhone spit out crispy bacon, you’d crank out the code to make it happen.

Oops, I think I just suggested it.

Comment by Erica Sadun | January 7, 2008 | 11:53 pm

Very cool, even if it’s not purely original (and who would think so? Obviously the I.Eat.Brainz type service that it utilized is VERY mature).

One request! Can you make 2-byte characters (e.g., Japanese) to be displayed properly?

What backend are you using to do the song id?

Comment by martijnve | January 8, 2008 | 1:18 pm

^ sonyerricson :-P

Nice app.

However it worked fine for the first several dozen of songs, after that it kept crashing my phone, reinstalled it and it is working fine again. Does it perhaps store/fail to delete all the 5second clips which causes the partition to fill up?

Still love it though,

perhaps you could have it keep track of identified tracks? And/or add the option to sample several songs and give the user the ability to wait untill he/she has wifi before uploading them.

Keep up the good work!

Im running 1.1.2 btw.

Hi Erica,

I love the Listen app, but i have a small request, because I’m not 24/7 connected to EDGE/WiFi, so maybe you could add something that saves the sound file and once you are connected you simply click the soundfile and then it connects the server and reveals the track info.

What do u think?

Comment by Stefano. L | January 8, 2008 | 7:37 pm

Works AMAZINGLY, had a similar product on my 8525, but, yours works better. tested it on ever station i could find on the radio, didnt pick up classical music or a local station that plays garage bands; but who cares, nobody listens to classical much and the garage bands are not famous.

Comment by jamesarm97 | January 8, 2008 | 8:12 pm

Very good start of an app. Only crashed once on me. Need some interface to restart or abort the listen. Also save a list of songs found or make a note out of them so we can look them up later.

Listen is amazing, terrific. It doesn’t work on everything, but I threw some pretty obscure stuff at it and it worked. Sometimes it named the wrong album, but song and artist were dead on. No stability problems so far (1.1.2). When it couldn’t identify the song it just returned to the “Push to Start Sampling” screen every time. Great job, and it does something both useful and fun for music lovers!

I need help please. Whenever i click on the link on this site to download the listen application i get this message “The page cannot be found, HTTP 404 not found” So how can I get it? Some people told me that I can get it via the installer on my iphone, so the application is listed in which category? Is it still there?
