Why no mdelper for Windows5 Comments

Mark writes: “I’ve had the bad luck of not being able to restore my iPhone-data with an iTunes backup, a common known problem by now for 2.0+ users…

But then I came across mdhelper and have seen on a couple of forums that it can extract all the lovely data right back out of the nasty mdbackup files - but only if you’re on a mac!

Do you have a Windows version coming out?? There are a lot of people who would be extremely grateful… I, myself, lost all my vacation pics, including pictures of my distant girlfriend in Germany (I live in Denmark), which is tearing me up inside… So please, please help.”

Hi Mark,

I mostly write iPhone software because it’s fun. No one is paying me for all the Erica Utilities, etc. Porting the software to Windows would involve buying a Win machine, starting up on OpenStep development, etc. In other words, it would be arduous if I were being paid and unthinkable for a hobby.

Sorry that I don’t have better news for you.

That having been said, you can buy a used Mac Mini, copy over your mdbackup files and use mdhelper on a Mac.

Best regards, — E

Erica Utilities: With Tweeting Power25 Comments

Erica Sadun | 12:16 pm | August 6, 2008 | 2.0, Test Requests, Update, Admin, Utilities

Just added tweet to the updated 2.0 Erica Utilities. Pass it three arguments: your twitter name, your twitter password and your tweet (use quotes to keep it as one argument). I’ll be writing this up over at O’Reilly for Friday.

With the release of core location, does anyone still care about a command-line findme application? If so, what are the options you’d like to see available? Return XML or lat/lon or what? Post to twitter? Please let me know in the comments.
