Beta 5 offers several new features. First and most obviously, there’s now a button that starts song sampling. After sampling one song, you can sample another without leaving and restarting the application.Once sampling has finished, the status bar brightens when it tells you “connecting to server”. This allows users to know when they can relax and let Listen.app do its job. It’s a small change but one that I very much like.I no longer use an alert sheet to offer options. After a song has been identified, a navigation bar allows you to “Send Note” by email and, as mentioned, the sampling button also re-appears. p.s. Please use Beta 5, not Beta 4. Version 4 does not bring back the button if a song is not found.

Here’s the bottom line: I don’t have a 1.0.2 iPhone. To make software work right on early units, it has to be compiled linking to 1.0.2 frameworks and tested on 1.0.2 machines. I don’t have the units. I don’t have the time. This is a hobby not a business. I own one (1) iPhone. It’s running 1.1.2. If for some reason many (and I mean *many*) thousands of dollars and several extra testing units were to miraculously show up, the decision might change. But it won’t. And I can’t. And I’m sorry. :(

Beta 3 adds UTF8 string encoding. For whatever reason, the iPhone doesn’t seem to handle full unicode–or maybe it’s not recognizing that NSUnicodeStringEncoding = 10. Anyway, please give this a try and let me know how much or how little this improves internationalization.

Beta 2 is ready to be tested. Unfortunately, Mobile Safari bombs on the search request (it tells you that you can’t perform the search on your device) but you can now send song information by email. Also, the interface is a little prettier.
Things not in this version: Multiple searches per launch. Foreign character support. Saving samples for later searches.

First of all, this was not my idea. The inspiration was from GeeZuzz (I hope I got that nick right!) who figured out the big idea but it took several weeks of hacking to get the iPhone details working so I take a little credit too.
Download a copy of the Listen beta. It’s still *very* beta. Install it on your iPhone, get near music and run it. It will sample the music for 5 seconds and then attempt to contact the id server. If it succeeds, great, you’ll see the song, artist and album. If it fails, nothing happens. You just wait 30 seconds and if you haven’t gotten an ID, quit and restart the program.
Let me know how it goes.
