XLaunch updated for 1.1.1
Erica Sadun | 11:35 am | October 18, 2007 | Applications, Software, iPod touch, iPhone
I have now updated XLaunch and it runs with the new M68AP and N45AP plists. It should work on both the iPhone and iPod touch. Please do not attempt to use this software with 1.0.2 or earlier. It will crash your system. Although SpringPatch now reduces XLaunch’s utility, it still offers some reasonably useful features. With it, you can:Select any application in either /Applications or /var/root/Applications and launch it, so long as the app is registered with SpringBoard.Hide and unhide app icons from appearing.Squeeze icons onto the dock.Perform a variety of resets. A normal reset hides all icons but the system ones, Installer.app and XLaunch. A full restore shows all icons and returns your iPhone to its default settings. A special exception is made to ensure that Installer.app is never hidden except by your personal, express wish.At some point, if the demand is there, I’ll add in application ordering support.Warning! If you are using an iPod touch, read the comments for this post and do not install on iPod touch until I have figured out what went wrong.

I love the apps. Whomever jailbroke the iPod touch is a god among men (so to speak).
I’ve filled my touch with many apps. But I have a question: can I add sources other than nullriver and conceited software?

I believe there are one or two other “pirate” repositories–I remember adding one ages ago–but the details escape me.

I just spend several days doing paperwork, contract stuff, finishing manuscript reviews, setting up this website, etc. That’s why my TUAW posting has been light–although I do have these productivity dips every month and there’s always a dry spell. My “to post” list is long! The funny thing is that last week, I did a lot of TUAW posts and no one else was around. This week, everyone’s back from vacation so I can take it easier.

Erica, I have a big problem at hand. So i was browsing around with XLaunch and I hit the “Toggle Visibility” button on my iPod touch. The summerboard resetted, and, its telling me “Waiting for Activation” but this is a iPod…. And right now, the top left of my spring/summerboard shows “NO Service” instead of the iPOD carrier logo. Please tell me its not bricked or I have to reset it to factory setting >.

Whoa! That is very surprising. I’ll check into this asap. In the mean time, I’ve added a warning that this is not to be used for iTouch until I clear it for safety.

Ok Erica, I believe the cause for that was that XLaunch overwrote the default [iPod Touch] N45AP.plist file with the file it has in the .app directory [iphone, i believe] and that is why. I was able to reconnect to the ipod with WinSCP, and THANK GOD ssh was still active. Replaced the N45AP.plist file with a newly made one for ipod touch and it worked again. In addition, the M68AP.plist file was modified as well.

I’ve put up profuse warnings and will attempt to fix as soon as I get a chance.
I need to detect the current platform and mod the files correctly.
Sorry!

Hi Erica,
Any chance of app re-ordering in the near future?
Thanks!

Hello Erica,
Here is a proposition for an icon replacement for XLaunch:
http://web.mac.com/freak6767/Site/Blog/Entrées/2007/10/30_XLaunch_Icon.html
The direct file is here too:

Let me know how it goes.
Sorry I posted here, couldn’t find your email to reach you!

Hello Erica
Curious if you could help me with something? I installed Xlaunch and fount it semi-useful but decided to not keep it (love the light app though!).
However my installer icon is pinned to the main summerboard. It previous was always at the “end” of any apps i downloaded which i preferred.
Is there a way to get it back there again?
Thanks

Pinning Installer is one of the big XLaunch safety features–it keeps Installer within reach at all times. So: Feature not bug.
As for removing that–just browse over to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app and edit your m68ap property list
