Need to shoot your screen? Snap2album allows you to take screen shots and send them directly to your iPhone photo album, where you can email them or sync them to your computer. The program is designed to be run from the command line. It takes no arguments. When run, it snaps the screen, puts the results into your camera roll, and quits.Install snap2album anywhere in your personal UNIX path. I keep mine in ~/bin. Other possibilities include /usr/local/bin and /bin. Keep in mind that space on the OS partition is limited. If you’ve removed the “noexec” flag from your media partition, it’s a lot better to keep your third party utilities there. Some people have asked about running snap2album on a time delay. If you have sleep installed, you can issue a command like: sleep 5; ./snap2album. Be aware though that the utility is not meant to be run from the iPhone itself but rather through an ssh session. If you want to snap your screens without the command-line, there’s also a solution. I gave Nate True a copy of the code and he added it to his Dock utility. That’s a much better choice for grabbing screen shots when you’re not near your home computer.

You can use the two new utilities (catch and throw) along with recaudio and playaudio to chat. Create a shell script along the following lines:
recaudio foo.amr
throw foo.amr
catch bar.amr
playaudio bar.amr
Repeat as desired and make sure that the units are 180-degrees out of sync. One unit catches while the other unit throws.

These are command-line utilities that use bonjour file sharing. On the sending iPhone or touch, issue throw file-to-share. On the receiving unit, issue catch path-to-save-to. Both are available in the Erica Utilities folder.

I just posted about iPhone (or touch) to iPhone (or touch) file transfer over at TUAW. SendFile now uses yesterday’s Bonjour breakthroughs and “share”s files. Scan the area for any files that are being shared.
This is a first release with this new tech and still a little rusty. I forgot to assign each phone a separate service id so they conflict with each other if you try to make both share at the same time. I’ll try to fix this in upcoming releases.

Details to follow over at TUAW. I’m just very tired and very happy.
TUAW post looks like it won’t pub for an hour or two. If you’re impatient, take a look at the utilities here.

Version 0.19 brings a few changes. First of all, since SendSong always creates a Ringtones.plist.hold file, you can now check for this file after a sync and restore from it. A “tink” sound means the file was not found. The normal “done” sound indicates it was restored.
Also new to 0.19 is that I’ve collapsed Play/Stop to a single button for space saving. Let me know if this behaves well and consistently.

I hacked away at SendSong for a bit but I’m still pretty unhappy with how unreliable it is with ringtones. The latest version (18-experimental) has a bunch of changes:
Please report your successes and problems here in the comments.

Leave comments, app requests, questions and so forth here. I won’t get around to any more SendSong or XLaunch fixes until Sundayish.

I have now updated XLaunch and it runs with the new M68AP and N45AP plists. It should work on both the iPhone and iPod touch. Please do not attempt to use this software with 1.0.2 or earlier. It will crash your system. Although SpringPatch now reduces XLaunch’s utility, it still offers some reasonably useful features. With it, you can:Select any application in either /Applications or /var/root/Applications and launch it, so long as the app is registered with SpringBoard.Hide and unhide app icons from appearing.Squeeze icons onto the dock.Perform a variety of resets. A normal reset hides all icons but the system ones, Installer.app and XLaunch. A full restore shows all icons and returns your iPhone to its default settings. A special exception is made to ensure that Installer.app is never hidden except by your personal, express wish.At some point, if the demand is there, I’ll add in application ordering support.Warning! If you are using an iPod touch, read the comments for this post and do not install on iPod touch until I have figured out what went wrong.

I’ve uploaded both SendFile and SendPics to the ftp site. SendFile allows you to email any file it finds in ~/Media/Documents. SendPics sends full-resolution snapshots by email.
SendFile was written by request–lots of people who said “I’d pay to have an application that does such and such”. I offered to write it in exchange for charitable contributions. After all was said and done, just $65 found its way to Faith In Practice. If you use these programs, please make a contribution to http://www.faithinpractice.org.
Faith in Practice is a non-profit volunteer organization that provides free surgical, medical and dental assistance to impoverished adults and children in Guatemala. When donating, please use FIP number 9951. This number refers to my friend Monique’s sister’s group and will help buy medical supplies for their next trip
Please send your pledges and your donation receipts to erica@tuaw.com.
